This week in Room 203...
Next week we will have the first 2 of the 3 tests involved in the district Hicap testing. Data from these tests is used for placement in the district highly capable programs, but the data is also looked at for things such as balancing classes, etc. We have spent time this week talking about test strategies and practicing how to take a test. Please write your student a note of encouragement and send it in Monday (it was included in the packet sent home on Thursday in the purple folders). Reading This week we continued the reading unit - Bigger Books Mean Amping up Reading Power. We talked about author intention with the use of literary language. Students practiced pulling out literary language from their books and we talked about the intention of author's in using such language. Today we did a gallery walk of a picture book and students Our first three lessons taught us how to read more fluently. We also reviewed choosing "Just Right" books and how important it is to be able to read the words in our books as well as to retell what is happening. Writing We also started a new unit in writing - Poetry. Ask you student about to describe a simple object to you through a poet's eyes. Our ceiling became "the sky of our classroom" and scissors "closed tight like a shark's mouth on a school of fish!" Math We continue to work on developing successful strategies in addition and subtraction as move into 3 and 4 digit numbers. Social Studies/Sharing We started a new unit in social studies - StoryPath. Students will be building a community and running businesses in the community. They are very excited! Sharing due next week is the Dream Mobile - construction paper sent home yesterday. Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:
