Important Information about the 4th grade Field Trip - Tillicum Excursion on Oct. 17th
Thank you for those who volunteered to chaperone! I have the following parents signed up and the fees have will be added to your students' account: -Erica and JT Batterson -James Tutor -Hope and Philip Guy -Nicole Wittren -Cynthia Graff If you volunteered and are not on the list, please email me as soon as possible. More details about the field trip to come home soon. This week...was jam packed! We started the week receiving a class award from Ms. Tapper for answering questions about Constitution Day (or as one student called it accidentally "Constipation Day") - the students were great at researching the answers and working as a team. We also had our first mini marketplace today - I apologize in advance for the candy - I told the students to ask parents first before they ate it! I had the students act as bankers and shopkeepers for each other -a great time was had by all. Other highlights of the week: Character Trait - Each month we will focus in on an important trait as a whole school. The trait for September is "responsibility." Congratulations to Madeline (Maddy) and Tytan are first character trait recipients. Math: This week we focused on standard algorithm in both addition and subtraction. We talked about why we borrow and how we can determine if our answers are reasonable. I am so impressed with how this group shares their math thinking and in such an entertaining way using SeeSaw! Reading: In reading, we are continuing our character studies through our read-aloud Tiger Rising and on our books. Students are really growing their thoughts about their character (for example: She is nice vs. He sits by himself in the last sit on the bus so no one will bother him and he doesn't have to deal with things). Writing: This week we focused in on using mentor texts to write and revise our introductions. We also continued to talk about showing rather then telling during our writing. (He is upset vs. He slammed the door behind him as he left the run in a huff). Science: This week we did more work with gravity and varying viewpoints of the sun/moon from earth. We discussed ancient civilizations and their different perspectives of the earth/sun. Important Dates

This amazing experience includes an Argosy Cruise to Blake Island for a 4-hour immersion into the history, culture, and traditions of Northwest Native American tribes. Highlights include:
Highlights of the week: Curriculum Night - I enjoyed seeing so many of you and hope I didn't overwhelm with you with trying to cram a year's worth of plans into 30 minutes. This is a great group of students and we are already off to a great start. Please contact me anytime with any questions. Character Trait - Each month we will focus in on an important trait as a whole school. The trait for September is "responsibility." I am really watching for students who are following our class and school expectations. Math: We took a district assessment this week as well as a mid-module assessment. We continue to talk about estimating as we move into adding/subtracting larger digits, including solving word problems. Reading: In reading, we are putting ourselves into our characters' shoes and practicing envisioning while we read. I am noticing as I test the students' reading levels, most of them can read any text put before them but struggle with comprehending what they have just read or thinking beyond the text. You can help with this by asking your students' questions about their reading and also providing them paper to stop and jot their thoughts as they read. Writing: This week we focused in on creating characters that go beyond surface level - we talked about creating traits for our character (inside and outside), having our characters have needs and wants, problems and ways to solve the problems. Science: This week we focused on perspective when looking at the earth, moon and sun, completed a very fun experiment involving gravity and made spacecraft landers with a STEM project. It has been a busy first full week of school! Curriculum night is next Tuesday (6:35-6:55 in the Multi-purpose room for an all-school presentation followed by a presentation in our classroom at 7:00 p.m.). I hope you can join me to learn about the curriculum map for the year as well as what 4th grade looks like including field trips and other events.
Highlights of the week: Math: We continue to build our guidelines for a math workshop model (collaboration, using strategies that work for us, talking/writing about math, using math tools, etc.) as well as working with place value to determine greater/less than and adding on or subtracting using larger numbers. Reading: We practiced different pieces of reading workshop including writing about our reading, summarizing, inferring and working with partners. Writing: We also practiced different pieces of the writing workshop including how to come up with ideas, where to get spelling help, revising, editing and how the writing process goes. Today we did an on-demand narrative piece where students wrote for 30 minutes about a story from their life. Technology: We have started talking about digital citizenship and practiced logging in and using some of the tools we have in class (Epic in reading, Prodigy/Zearn in math, SeeSaw and Class Notebook).
