Seesaw Please follow the directions (in your curriculum night packet) to get notifications from Seesaw. Each of your students has a journal that will have videos, pictures and assignments posted to it. The latest in Seesaw shows your students making catapults with their Kindergarten buddies. Fun was had by all! Reading This week we started our first unit in Lucy Calkins. We focused on continuing to choose just right books, worked on taking sneak peaks at our books before reading, set goals for ourselves as readers, made choices in how we read our books and worked on making sure to stop for comprehension checks. We also did a class gallery walk with a read-aloud book called Fox. Students made predictions based on pictures and text before we read and engaged in thoughtful discussions throughout the book questioning character motivation and reevaluating our initial predictions. Writing We also started our first Lucy Calkins writing unit - Narrative writing. We studied several mentor texts (Owl Moon, Roller Coaster, and the Leaving Morning) to study the work of master authors as they wrote about their small moments. We started small moment tracking in our mini-notebooks and practiced adding details, dialogue and using our senses to describe the setting and details of our small moment. Many students wrote about our catapult building STEM activity as their small moment! Math We started Module (Unit) Two in our Eureka Math curriculum. In this unit, students work on measuring using inches, centimeters and meters. Students enjoyed measuring items around the room and finding out if their estimate was close to the actuality. Next week we will delve into using addition/subtraction with measurement story problems. Social Studies We had our second class meeting this week learning about how we can use different descriptive words to describe our feelings. We also talked about how our classroom expectations and being a good citizen extend outside to the hallways, lunchroom, recess, bus, etc. Donations for 2nd Grade Store Thank you to all who donated! Eagle Reader Eagle Reader calendars for the month of October were sent home this week. Students who read the required minutes are able to choose a free book at the Eagle Reader Clubhouse. In addition, there is a class award: Golden book award…..each month a class will compete for the Golden book award. The award is given to the class with the most participation. If your class wins this award then every student gets to come to the clubhouse to pick out a book from your class! Let's try to win it! Have a great weekend! Curriculum Night Thank you so much for all of you who were able to attend last night. For those of you who were not able to come, I am sending home a hard copy of the information presented. Please let me know if you have any questions. You can also find a digital copy by accessing the helpful links tab. Seesaw Please follow the directions (in your curriculum night packet) to get notifications from Seesaw. Each of your students has a journal that will have videos, pictures and assignments posted to it. We had a book tasting today at Ms. Warner's Italian Cafe - please check it out on SeeSaw! Reading This week we focused on really thinking about our reading. We talked about meta cognition - how we take an author's words and put our on spin on what we think about them. Students started working with their reading partners and I can't wait to record some of the partner talk (they interview one another with microphones - its fabulous). We started a jot parking lot - we write our connections, thoughts, wonderings and predictions. Writing We are still working to build stamina in our writing. We can write for about 10 minutes straight right now. We practiced punctuation, learned about sentence structure and proper nouns also this week. We ended the week working on our writer's heart. We talked about how the things in our life and experiences we have had can help us come up with small moment stories. Math We completed Module (Unit) One in math and students took the end of unit assessment today. They have developed strategies to add and subtract double digit with single digits within 100. We talked about the importance of showing our work and explaining on our thinking. I also introduced them to Splashmath (they can play this at home, the log-in is in your curriculum folder). The kids love it because they can earn coins and open different worlds as they work through math problems. Social Studies We had our first successful class meeting this week learning about how we can solve problems using bugs and wishes and also how we can give compliments to one another. We continued to talk about being what being a citizen in a community means. Donations Needed for 2nd Grade Store If you have any gently used toys, books, or would like to pick up some items from the dollar store, we are in need of items to stock our Soaring Eagle store. Items that are popular are: pencils, erasers, toys, small notepads, puzzles, etc. Thank you! Have a great weekend! Reading This week we officially launched into reading! After much anticipation, our classroom library is now open and students have been practicing choosing "just right" books, building stamina as we read and close reading for comprehension. During reading we also learned a little more about our brains and how our schema is our "mental filing cabinet". When we find just right books, we can activate our schema and grow our brains! Next week, we will continue to practice what building a reading life looks like and the parts of reader’s workshop. Writing We began writer's workshop this week and focused on building stamina as we write, how we come up with our ideas, the parts of the writing process and what our writer’s workshop will look like. Next week we will explore the kinds of tools and resources writers can use to help improve their writing. Math This week in math we continued our review of concepts learned last year in 1st grade. We are working with adding and subtracting numbers within 100, and using number sentences and math drawings to show our work. Next week we will wrap up Module 1, continuing to build on the previous year's learning. I am blown away by the mathematical thinking in this room and how the students are so eager and ready to be challenged. Social Studies We started our first Social Studies unit on Communities this week. We discussed the word "citizen" and what we think it means. Next week we will talk more about what a citizen is, and what it means to be a good citizen. Curriculum Night Curriculum night is coming up on September 20th! Please come to room 203 at 6:00. I'll give an overview of our year and curriculum from 6:00-6:30. Then we'll head to the gym for a special presentation from our principal, Ms. Tapper. Hope to see you all there! Curriculum Night Presentation with Ms. Bryant and Mrs. Stempson (7:00) You are invited to the library to learn how to use children’s books to help your child through life’s ups and downs and/or talk with your child about cultural and social issues. Ms. Bryant, school counselor, and Mrs. Stempson, Teacher-librarian, will share book ideas to help you explore issues such as friendship, race, gender roles, life transitions, diversity, disability awareness, anger, and anxiety. You will see examples of how to use a book to turn potentially tough conversations into enjoyable and valuable learning experiences. You will also learn how to use the online catalog to find books to check out from the Maple Hills library. Parents of 3rd-5th graders will meet in the library at 6:00 and parents of 1st and 2nd graders at 7:00. These are the opposite times of when you will be meeting with your child’s classroom teacher during Curriculum Night.
