Math This week we started our final unit, Module 8 - Geometry. We discussed attributes of shapes, learned a lot of vocabulary and practiced drawing different types of shapes. We ended the week making quadrilateral robots. The end of unit assessment for Module 7 is coming home today. Students were provided the opportunity to retake the test if they wanted to improve their grade. You will find both assessments (unless they chose not to take the retake) in their purple folders. Please note if you noticed your student struggled, we are continuing to work in small groups on these concepts even though we have moved on to another unit. Reading This week we focused in on the genres of biography and realistic fiction. Students picked one person to study and created a power-point presentation to share their new learning. They created a comic strip to outline the timeline of their historical fictional novels. As much as I love Dog Man and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, it has been nice to have the students branching out to other books as we complete these genre studies. Writing/Science We continued to conduct experiments this week and write like scientists in our lab notebooks. Students asked questions, came up with a hypothesis, created a procedure, collected data and wrote a conclusion. We were fortunate to have a second force and motion lab where we tested gravity, friction and amounts of force using different toys. We are starting to write informational how to books involving force and motion using what we know about writing like a scientist. Reminders: -Next week's sharing: Summer Acrostic poem -Please return purple folders daily -Library books are due each Friday. Book bags are due Tuesdays. -Please send 2 small snacks in each day with your student. Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:

Math This week found us discussing line plots, using rulers as a number line and taking the Module (Unit) 7 test. We moved onto our last unit, which involves geometry and time. I promised the students we would have time at the end of the year to revisit multiplication and throw in some fractions. A plug for Pack 468 and Daniel Tonight in the multipurpose room at Maple Hills, Pack 468 is hosting a carnival at 7:00 p.m. with popcorn, cupcakes, games, prizes and information about cub scouts. This carnival is for K-5 boys and girls. Math This week we worked with measurement including solving two-step story problems involving measurement. We also started working with line plots. We took an end of year district assessment and will have the Module 7 assessment next week. We will be finishing off the year with Module 8 - geometric shapes. Reading This week we focused in on the genre of non-fiction. We discussed text features and students went on text feature scavenger hunts as they read their books. Students also continued to read mystery books and solved the mystery of "Who took Ms. Warner's chair?" Social Studies This week we went over our family interviews and then created a Venn diagram comparing the past to the present. We also discussed why we look back on the past and what we can learn. Writing/Science We continued to conduct experiments this week and write like scientists in our lab notebooks. Students asked questions, came up with a hypothesis, created a procedure, collected data and wrote a conclusion. The experiments this week involved friction/force surrounding a tower of coins and a catapult determining if a cotton ball or ping pong ball would go further. We also had a fabulous in-house field trip at a toy-making workshop. Hopefully your student has shown you their amazing toys! Teacher Appreciation Week Thank you for your overwhelming kindness this week with flowers, books for our classroom, lovely cards, treats and gifts! I absolutely adore this class and appreciate all of your generosity! Math This week we continued to work with money in two-step story problems. We also started working with measurement using rulers. Reading This week we focused in on the genre of mystery. We discussed the ingredients of a mystery and students studied their books looking for clues and red herrings. We will have a mystery in the classroom to solve next week! Social Studies This week we continued to study the history of Issaquah and enjoyed a gallery walk through items of the past from a history trunk provided by the district as part of our curriculum. Students were pretty enthralled to see what curling irons and other items from the past looked like. Please make sure to turn in your family interview if you have not done so - this will be the last piece of our unit. We were also fortunate to have two visits from people in the community. Dr. Norquist, a local veterinarian came in response to Charlotte's letter. She told the class about her training and work experience as well as answered a lot of questions. Several of our students wrote to the Renton Police Department and we had two officers come talk to the class as well as let us all explore their patrol cars - such a fun experience! Writing/Science Students were excited to conduct experiments this week and write like scientists in their lab notebooks. They asked questions, came up with a hypothesis, created a procedure, collected data and wrote a conclusion! Reminders: -Next week's sharing: Circle Story -Please return purple folders daily -Library books are due each Friday. Orange Ruler Thank you for your support of our school through the Orange Ruler fundraiser! We were one of the top three classes sending out the most invites so we had a Jamba Juice party! We also came in 6th place overall, surpassing our goal. This earned us a spot in the pig race and a Kona Ice party. While our pig looked very stylish (pictures to be sent separately!) he was not very speedy, despite his name - "Speedy." However, our class definitely was in fine speedy form at the fun run! Math This week we continued to work with money. We discussed the value of different coins, talked about exchanging coins out and worked on story problems involving coins and bills. We also discussed making change from larger bills. Reading This week in reading we worked on author's purpose and summarizing. We have read many books this week that involve empathy and kindness. Students have come so far in their discussions about the books they are reading and are really deep thinkers! Social Studies We continued to work on our map of the Issaquah area this week. We added in locations where coal was mined, logging occurred and farming took place. Students are working on posters to create a gallery walk of transportation (steam engines, ferries, horse and buggy, trains). Writing We continued our focus on grammar, sentence structure and conventions. Students wrapped up their fiction stories in preparation for our new unit starting next week: writing scientific lab reports. Reminders: -Next week's sharing: Bag buddies (let me know if you need a bag) -Please return purple folders daily -Library books are due each Friday. Book bags are due Tuesdays. -Please send 2 small snacks in each day with your student. Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:
