A reminder about conferences... Conferences in 2nd grade are student-led. Your student will attend and lead the first part of the conference talking about goals, reflections and showing student work. I will have time at the end to talk about student growth and progress. Reading We continued our non-fiction unit this week studying how information is connected across texts. Students worked in teams to research books to find similar text features and facts. Writing Students worked this week to determine who their audience is that they are writing to, what questions the audience might have and how can we make our books readable to to our audience (edit to check our spelling and punctuation!). Math We dove into our 4th math module (unit) this week. This unit focuses in on strategies for solving multi-digit addition and subtraction problems as well as solving story problems. Students are introduced to many different strategies - this can cause some frustration. I let the students know that I want them to have many tools in their math tool box and once they have those tools they can choose the strategy that works the best for them. Science This week we continued our work on ecosystems talking about changes in an ecosystem and if the change was a human or natural cause and what the effect of the change might be. This week's thank you's go to: Mr. Soble for volunteering as a watchdog, Mrs. Wallis for helping during our math block, Mrs. Boyd for helping me around the classroom, Mrs. Faehnrich for a fabulous art lesson and Mrs. Avila for assisting. Thank you also to all of our parents who worked in the book fair. Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:

Purple Folder Reminder Please make sure to check this daily for important paperwork. In today's folder, you will find a study guide for our upcoming math assessment. Reading We continued our non-fiction unit this week studying text features and the vocabulary specific to our texts. Students also "gifted" their reading partners with their favorite non-fiction book this week after we had a visit from the book fairy ourselves. Writing Students are starting to finish their first and second non-fiction pieces. Most of them have at least 5 chapters for their expert topic. We spent time this week working with our partner to peer edit each other's work. Math We wrapped up our place value unit today and will spend time next week reviewing before we take our end of unit assessment. Students may find benefit from time on Zearn at home for additional math practice. Science This week we studied ecosystems and spent time working with our science journals to draw out and describe different types of ecosystems. This week's thank you's go to: Mr. Johnson for volunteering as a watchdog, Mrs. Wallis for helping during our math block, Mrs. Boyd for helping me around the classroom, Mrs. Faehnrich for a fabulous art lesson and Mrs. Avila for assisting. Seesaw The latest in Seesaw shows your students playing golf in p.e., reading by flashlight and sharing small moment stories during camp writing share. Un-homework/Book Bags Un-homework is due every Monday. Students have 5 options to choose from including the attached worksheets and choices from the monthly calendar sent with the first packet of the month. Book bags should be returned every Tuesday to check out on Thursdays. Reading This week we did a whole class book study of Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Horrible Bad Day. We talked about cause/effect, prediction, author intention and made a connection. We spent Friday reading by flashlight in our camping themed classroom. Writing We spent the week writing fast and furious to finish our small moment narrative pieces. We had such a wonderful camp share celebration today with each student reading their final version. I am so proud of their finished products - you have wonderful story tellers! Math We continued our work with place value and finding efficient as well as effective ways to add. We worked with adding money using 1s, 10s and 100s as well as placing numbers on number lines and counting the jumps to add. Students also learned a new strategy for answering story problems called read, draw, write. Social Studies We continue to work on our class citizenship project - a lemonade stand for charity. We are in the planning stages - details to come. Science We started our Organisms science unit by creating and setting up our science journals. PTA Please consider signing up for PTA if you have not done so - PTA is shooting for 100% membership and fund fabulous programs for our students. Thank you to all of you who donated and volunteered for our very fun and successful harvest party! Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:
