Hi Families - hope you have a lovely weekend. I will be at the Liberty game tonight to see my daughter at halftime with the drill team in this lovely weather. I sent home progress reports today (sorry for the typo, one of my 12 year old daughters helped me create the template, collaboration is a tough spell =)) - please review and sign as soon as possible. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
We have many exciting events coming up next week. Monday: Student council speeches, election and a Willy Wonka themed writing celebration to share our published realistic fiction stories (please feel free to join us at 1:00 p.m. - just send me an email so I can let the office know you are coming) Tuesday: Picture retakes and tech party Wednesday: Oobleck and Fall Party Thursday: Black and orange spirit day/Escape Room Highlights of this week: Character Trait - Each month we will focus in on an important trait as a whole school. The trait for October is "acceptance." Congratulations Magnus and Averie! Math: This week we took our end of unit test for module 2. We started the third unit this week working with area and perimeter. Ask your students to show you the "old school" third grade way of solving perimeter vs. the "new school" 4th grade way. Reading: We took our end of unit assessment as well as pre-assessment for our new reading unit. The next unit will be a study in non-fiction. Writing: This week we worked on responding to this prompt from Scholastic Books: WILLY WONKA IS LOOKING FOR AMAZING STORY IDEAS FROM ACROSS THE USWilly Wonka is searching for the most exciting, most brilliant story ideas from 5-12 year olds across the US to transform into wonderful creations. Log on to Scholastic.com and enter your student if they would like to submit an idea. I will be sending home what they did in class if they want to enter those as well. We also worked on a task involving folk tales - we are looking at three different sources and gaining information to write our own folktale. Social Studies: This week found us comparing and contrasting the coastal and plateau tribes. We also did a research project to answer essential questions related to the first people of Washington. We were fortunate to have a visit from the Burke Museum as well - we were able look and touch artifacts from the tribes. Science: We took a trip to space with the google expeditions. The kids loved the virtual reality devices and are anxious to try them out again. Kindergarten Buddies: We went to Ms. Johnson's Kindergarten class this morning to have snack and build towers out of paper and index cards with our buddies. The 4th graders were so helpful to the little ones - check out SeeSaw for photos! Important Dates

Highlights of this short week (Monday was a teacher work day and Friday our fabulous field trip!)
Character Trait - Each month we will focus in on an important trait as a whole school. The trait for October is "acceptance." Math: This week we worked on using metric capacity, including adding and subtracting mixed-measurements as well as solved word problems using length, mass and capacity. The end of unit test for this unit will be on Wednesday. Reading: In reading, we reviewed our pre-assessment and looked over sample responses. We used a rubric to grade the responses to help us with our reading responses for the post-assessment students are taking on Monday. Writing: This week we completed publication of our realistic fiction stories. We will share them with our classmates in a celebration on Thursday. We will take the on-demand for this unit on Tuesday - please talk with your students tonight to help them come up with story ideas for a narrative or realistic fiction story. Social Studies: This week we had a whole grade-level lesson on Washington geography and created maps. We also explored items used by the indigenous people from at trunk loaned to us from the Burke Museum. The highlight of the week was the field trip to Blake Island - the boat ride, presentation, food and beach area were the highlight. One other highlight - having a bus with a bathroom. I have never had so many students ask to use the bathroom in 50 minutes before! Please encourage students to read all directions in their assignments during school, not rush through their work, complete all assigned work and turn in homework. All of these skills are important to being successful in school. We practice and I remind them often, but hope you can help as well. Important Dates:
Highlights of the week:
Character Trait - Each month we will focus in on an important trait as a whole school. The trait for October is "acceptance." Math: This week we completed two real world math tasks. The first one was the "Bug Task" - students planned out how much clay and pipe cleaners we would need for a class set so everyone could make a bug. I then bought the supplies based on their estimates and we tested our math by then making the bugs. We did a similar task planning a whole school popcorn party - working out how many bags of popcorn would be needed to feed everyone who would come without going over. We also started our Second Module which involves adding and subtracting measurements, including simplifying varying measurements. Reading: In reading, we finished up Tiger Rising and our first reading unit. We discussed theme, author's intention, making interpretations and our feelings about the book through class discussions and typing them into our class notebook accounts. Writing: This week we worked on finalizing our realistic fiction writing pieces. We will share our published pieces next week and have an on-demand writing assessment next week. Please help your students come up with ideas that they might use for a realistic fiction story - we often use small moments from our own life to help us craft stories. Remind them of author Sundee Frazier's presentation and how she used small moments from her own life to shape some of the scenes in her stories. Science - If you logged onto SeeSaw this week, you saw pictures from our visit to the Curiosity Cube. We had fun using virtual reality to look at the inner workings of the body, built a robot arm and tested water ph levels. Social Studies: This week found us starting our first social studies unit. We discussed indigenous peoples and the Snoqualmie Tribe. Important Dates

Character Trait - Each month we will focus in on an important trait as a whole school. The trait for October is "acceptance." Math: This week we worked on multi-step story problems involving addition and subtraction with large numbers. We finished off the week with our assessment for Module 1 today. I am looking forward to spending a few days working on some fun real world math tasks before we move on to our next Module next week. Reading: In reading, we are continuing our character studies through our read-aloud, Tiger Rising and though our own personal books. We also are discussing making interpretations of our books by looking at the characters, setting, plot, recurring objects and the mood. Writing: This week we worked on "sticking our landing" with a satisfying ending for our readers, as well as revising and editing our writing. Science: This week we focused on the Earth's position as well as differing scientific views over time about the Earth's movement. We swapped classes this week for science, so students had the opportunity to learn from Mr. Kinkade and Mrs. Tutor as well! Big shout out to Averie and Ellie who bravely ran for student body leadership and gave amazing speeches this week. Important Dates
