This week in Room 203...
The latest in Seesaw shows your students talking about their favorite book (videos are live now =). Please send me an email if you need the link to sign up for Seesaw - it is a great way to see what is going on in our classroom. Un-homework/Book Bags If your child chooses to do this, un-homework is due every Monday. They have 5 options to choose from including the attached worksheets and choices from the monthly calendar sent with the first packet of the month. Book bags should be returned every Tuesday to check out on Thursdays. If you need a copy of the form for your child to check out book bags, please send me an email. Reading We finished our first reading unit this week talking about lessons authors teach us and comprehension work. We used the Somebody - Wanted - But - So method to retell our stories. We celebrated our growth as readers by sharing our favorite books and creating cover art. Writing We worked on craft moves this week by studying mentor texts. We admired how master authors told their personal narratives using craft moves such as dialogue, description, feelings, literary language and inner thoughts. We are working to use at least 3 craft moves in our own pieces. Math We started Module (Unit) 3 by developing efficient and effective counting strategies working with numbers up to 1000. Students were able to strategize and count over 1000 straws by bundling them into groups of 10 and then groups of 100. They were able to do this in less than 7 minutes - all 18 students working together! Social Studies We continue to work on citizenship, talking about rights and responsibilities as a U.S. citizen. Thank you to our classroom volunteers! Mrs. Boyd, Mrs. Heiter, Mrs. Wallis, our art docent, Mrs. Faehnrich and our room parent, Mrs. Johnson! Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:

Please follow the directions (in your curriculum night packet) to get notifications from Seesaw. Each of your students has a journal that will have videos, pictures and assignments posted to it. The latest in Seesaw shows your students talking about their favorite book. Reading This week we continued to work on strategies for working with tricky words. We also talked about author intention. Author's intention is a great way to think about our reading and ask questions. We used this practice with our current read-aloud book, the Lemonade War. Students figured out the author intended there to be conflict between the siblings in the book so that their would be a lemonade stand battle and a resolution at the end. Writing This week and a nice tie-in to reading, was a lot of about author intention. How do you want your piece to be perceived? We also compared a second grade piece of writing to a third grade piece of writing and talked about the differences. This helped us set goals for ourselves as writers. Math We completed Module (Unit) Two, our measurement unit. We took the end of unit assessment today, which will come home next week for your review. We will start our unit on Place Value next week. We worked on real world math tasks this week and I was amazed at the varying strategies students had to solve repeated addition/early multiplication problems. Social Studies We continue to work on citizenship, talking about rights and responsibilities. We wrapped up the week creating hand posters outlining the rights we have as students as well as our responsibilities. Eagle Reader

Seesaw NEEDED: ROOM PARENT FOR ROOM 203 PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN COORDINATING OUR CLASS PARTIES, THE HARVEST PARTY ON THE 31ST IS OUR FIRST ONE! Seesaw Please follow the directions (in your curriculum night packet) to get notifications from Seesaw. Each of your students has a journal that will have videos, pictures and assignments posted to it. The latest in Seesaw shows your students using bee-bots to incorporate coding in math and writing as well as our latest STEM activity. Reading This week we worked on strategies for working with tricky words. We recognized that as 2nd graders we are reading bigger books that come with more difficult words. To solve those tricky words instead of skipping them or guessing, we worked hard on working with strategies to solve them. Ask your students about how they use "chunky monkey," "skippy frog," words within words and "stretchy snake." We also continue to stop and jot as we think about what we are reading. We will be taking out stock in post-its soon! Writing We continue to work on small moment stories. Students worked on creating a "hook" to draw readers into our stories as well as endings to bring our writing full circle. We also continue to work on conventions and sentence structure. We also took a small break from our small moments on Friday to create stories with sequence so we could use the bee-bots to code an algorithm to tell a story from beginning, middle to end. Math We are nearing the end of Module (Unit) Two, our measurement unit. Students spent the week working with measurement addition/subtraction story problems, using their rulers as number lines and solving real world problems with measurement. The highlight was using the bee-bots as we created mazes using 5 centimeter stretches. Students had to "debug" their programs when the bee-bots went off track and reworked their algorithms. Social Studies We continue to work on citizenship, talking about rights and responsibilities. We also have had several class meetings with the sweetest compliment circles ever! Science/STEM Students learned about the engineering process this week and we discussed what an engineer does. Students determined that engineers solve problems! We then read Those Darn Squirrels and students deduced that Mr. Fookwire was an engineer as he solved a problem, came up with a plan and then had to revise his plan after testing. Students then became engineers themselves as they built a house for the three little pigs (decorated ping pong balls =), tested it with the big bad wolf hair dryer and then revised based on performance during the test. I love working with this fabulous group of students! Eagle Reader Students who read the required minutes are able to choose a free book at the Eagle Reader Clubhouse. In addition, there is a class award: Golden book award…..each month a class will compete for the Golden book award. The award is given to the class with the most participation. If your class wins this award then every student gets to come to the clubhouse to pick out a (from your class! Let's try to win it! Have a great weekend!
