This week in Room 203...
Seesaw Please follow the directions (in your curriculum night packet) to get notifications from Seesaw. Each of your students has a journal that will have videos, pictures and assignments posted to it. The latest in Seesaw shows your students making catapults with their Kindergarten buddies. Fun was had by all! Reading This week we started our first unit in Lucy Calkins. We focused on continuing to choose just right books, worked on taking sneak peaks at our books before reading, set goals for ourselves as readers, made choices in how we read our books and worked on making sure to stop for comprehension checks. We also did a class gallery walk with a read-aloud book called Fox. Students made predictions based on pictures and text before we read and engaged in thoughtful discussions throughout the book questioning character motivation and reevaluating our initial predictions. Writing We also started our first Lucy Calkins writing unit - Narrative writing. We studied several mentor texts (Owl Moon, Roller Coaster, and the Leaving Morning) to study the work of master authors as they wrote about their small moments. We started small moment tracking in our mini-notebooks and practiced adding details, dialogue and using our senses to describe the setting and details of our small moment. Many students wrote about our catapult building STEM activity as their small moment! Math We started Module (Unit) Two in our Eureka Math curriculum. In this unit, students work on measuring using inches, centimeters and meters. Students enjoyed measuring items around the room and finding out if their estimate was close to the actuality. Next week we will delve into using addition/subtraction with measurement story problems. Social Studies We had our second class meeting this week learning about how we can use different descriptive words to describe our feelings. We also talked about how our classroom expectations and being a good citizen extend outside to the hallways, lunchroom, recess, bus, etc. Donations for 2nd Grade Store Thank you to all who donated! Eagle Reader Eagle Reader calendars for the month of October were sent home this week. Students who read the required minutes are able to choose a free book at the Eagle Reader Clubhouse. In addition, there is a class award: Golden book award…..each month a class will compete for the Golden book award. The award is given to the class with the most participation.
