This week in Room 203...
Math We took our end of unit assessment for the addition/subtraction unit this week. Your students showed perseverance and strong mathematical thinking despite saying "Not another test!" We finished the week with a real world math task. Students had to prove a claim with mathematical thinking including creating a poster to share in front of the class outlining their assumptions and strategies. Please ask them if it is possible to watch 50 movies in one night. We start our next module (unit), multiplication next week. Reading This week we created book clubs to help us really think about the higher level books we are reading. In our book clubs, we created norms for how our meetings should go as well as discussed stopping points in our books were we had questions, made connections for just needed to do a recap. Writing We continued to write poetry this week focusing on feelings, mood, and using comparative language. Next week we will have a poetry slam - more information to follow but think berets, turtlenecks or all black for an outfit =) Of course this is optional as always and not required. Social Studies/Sharing Students continued to work on our community this week. This week we created a classroom economy and certificates for the goods we will and services we will be selling. STEM Night Family STEM Night is fast approaching and we are getting excited to share a wonderful variety of engineering activities, including Flying Contraptions from the Museum of Flight. Your family will work as a team on many STEM challenges. Come prepared to learn a trick or two from your child and perhaps they’ll learn something from you too as you work to solve hands-on problems together. The evening starts at 6pm and you’ll want to be at Maple Hills right on time to have enough time to fit in all the activities. Science Fair Projects will also be on display in the hallways. Maple Hills teachers are looking forward to seeing you and your family on Friday, March 8th, 6pm-7:30pm, at the Family STEM Night. Information was sent home earlier this week and I would encourage students to do a project to share! Let me know if you need help with ideas. Reminders: -Sharing is required and part of student listening and speaking grade. -Please return purple folders daily -Library books are due each Friday. Book bags are due Tuesdays. -Please send 2 small snacks in each day with your student. Have a great weekend! Ms. Warner Dates to Know:
